Wouldn't surprise mr. There were sooo many alt groups back then. It was the largest category on Usenet.

I noticed that too. Wasn't "alt" supposed to mean alternate? With so many of them, I feel like they were basically mainstream, not "alternate". :P

They were meant as an alternative to the moderated newsgroups in the
various non-alt hierarchies. comp.dcom.telecom begat
alt.comp.dcom.telecom when the moderators started taking their
responsibilities a bit too personally.

It's up to Usenet's maintainers to decide which newsgroup a subject falls into. The more esoteric the subject, the more chance it has to fall in te alt catagory.

It was pretty big here (Phoenix). There were a LOT of different BBSes, each with their own group of callers that were pretty different crowds. You still get that today if you hop around between different types of systems.

I was part of a local othernet back then, and we had boards that were
laid out with the hub "in the middle", roughly. I could call the hub,
the other sysop could call the hub and it was a free call. Calling from
one BBS "area" to the other was a toll call - so we ended up with
exclusive user groups.

We had gettogethers a couple of times a year, it was nice to see
have different user groups on the local boards, share with them on the networked boards and still be able to meet up.

In later years, the Programmer's Workshop West (home of the GT Power BBS software) was located in Phoenix. ;)

I used Agent exclusively, from day one 'til newsgroups were no longer a thing. <sigh>...I miss the old Usenet.

That was like 25-30 years ago, the prime of that.

I use Thunderbird

i also used that other one that someone else mentioned.
I never liked thunderbird, even for an email client. it just seems to buggy to me and i don't like the interface. I have claws running just to keep all my email accts active.
